The policeman shook his head.

“Wore. She’s dead. “

The woman, who had been standing, grabbed the back of another chair and sat down.

“Dead? But she was here last night.”

“What time did she leave?” The question came from a second cop, the youngest in the group.

The woman took a Kleenex and wiped her eyes.

“At about 10. I walked her and her dog downstairs.”

“There was a fire. Two of her dogs died with her.”

“I loved that woman. I was expecting her any minute.”

A few minutes later, the policemen left after offering their condolences.

She made herself some tea and thought back to that afternoon in the taxi.

“Please don’t die. Please God don’t let her die,” she thought as the taxi took them to the hospital.

Nadia had come early to her house after she had walked the dog.

“I don’t feel well,” she told her friend.

The friend saw that her face looked pale and that the dark shadows under her eyes were more pronounced.

“The hospital is nearby. I’ll take you there.”

They left the dog in Nadia’s apt. after the first taxi they hailed wouldn’t take him.

Nadia’s friend looked at the houses on their way to the hospital. She didn’t want Nadia to see that she was trying hard not to cry.

“Hurry. Please go faster,” she asked the driver.

“ At this time of day they may have a lot of people waiting,” she explained to Nadia. “ It’s after 5 o’clock.”

Nadia and her friend held each other’s hands when they walked up the ER steps.

“You’ll be fine,” the friend said with a faint smile.

“”Yeah, I’ll be fine.”

She looked at the two double glass doors and sighed.

They kept her in the hospital for about a week. Her heart wasn’t working the way it should, the doctor told Nadia’s friend.

The friend touched Nadia’s forehead.

The friend left the hospital and went to Nadia’s place. The two dogs greeted her by waving their tails. She fed them in the living room and went to the kitchen.

“Hello, Big One.” The dog smelled her and looked at her face.

White Dog

Last night I was able to watch a movie from the early 80s directed by Samuel Fuller called White Dog. I had never heard of it before and I found it by accident at the public library. White Dog shows what racism can do to people and animals. The unnamed white German shepherd has been trained to attack black people. A young actress adopts him when she accidentally runs into him with her car. The ending made me cry. A so called human being trained him and it he, not the man, had to go. The dog’s original owner was not punished. The final scene of the movie shows the dog left to die alone. I realize that he couldn’t live, but still it made me very sad. White Dog did not do well when it came out. It is one of the best movies about a very hard subject that I have ever seen.

For the rest of my life I will feel guilty because I didn't bring him to the U.S. with me. I left him with whom I thought would take good care of him. Now I don't know if this was so. I know that I didn't have to pretend with Chiquito. He didn't judge me and he didn't laugh when I told him (by example) who I was.

Chiquito Guilt

Friday, March 9, 2009: Sometimes I feel guilty because I have to deal with the neighbor in Argentina who may have neglected Chiquito when I left her to take care of him. And I wonder if he, up there in Doggie Heaven, resents it. I know that maybe dogs are not supposed to have souls, but I feel that they have souls and feelings. It is necessary for the time being to keep up some sort of relationship with this woman. There is no one else and there are things over in Argentina that need to be done.

Thanksgiving Photos

Our Thanksgiving was leisurely. Watched the Macy's parade and football and Miracle on 34th Street (the new version, which I much prefer to the old one, though I know most people don't), took a walk with the dog, and then commenced prepping and cooking the dinner, which took about an hour total (the Pommes Anna bakes for about 45 mins.).

The Crab au Gratin seems to have been improperly named. Technically, it's true, it was crab with browned breadcrumbs and cheese on it. But a more accurate name would be Crab in Sherried Cream Sauce. It was a Mornay sauce, with crab, sherry, Worcestershire sauce and Old Bay added to it, and so even after its 20 minutes of baking at 400F (with Ritz cracker crumbs and Parmesan cheese atop), it remained more a bisque or a dip than a solid mass. Still, it held its own on the plate along with the spinach sauteed with pine nuts and garlic and the Pommes Anna. And it tasted luscious.

Of course, I forgot to take photos of any of the prep or the finished products, until we were halfway through with them. In fact, we had eaten all the spinach already when I remembered. So below are photos of the remnants of our meal, including the Waldorf Salad and the Beringer chenin blanc, which we drank instead of the Riesling that we bought for the event and then forgot to chill.

Skunked

Our dog was skunked last night when she went out for her last pee of the night, around 9:15 p.m. She got it in the face and neck. At first she couldn't open her eyes and was foaming from the mouth. Though my spouse saw the varmint trying to escape our fence, he wasn't sure in the dark, seeing it at a distance from the rear with its tail held aloft, whether it was a skunk or a porcupine (it looked large), so we checked the dog's face for quills, and bites or bleeding, while she was still out on the deck. Finding none, and smelling a strong eau-de-Pepe-Le-Pew, we assumed a skunk spray.

We called the emergency vets, who told us to rinse her face over and over with warm water, which we did in the tub upstairs. We didn't really want to bring her in the house but it was dark outside, we don't have a portable tub or wading pool or anything large enough to use as one, and we weren't sure where the perpetrator was. After the warm water rinse -- by now her eyes were open and she'd stopped foaming -- we scrubbed her with a tomato sauce-water mixture. We are apparently quite ill-prepared for this sort of event: no tomato juice, no hydrogen peroxide and about a half-cup of white vinegar to our names.

Fortunately, it was warm and not rainy last night, so we opened most of the windows upstairs and some downstairs, using window and exhaust fans in some, but the house still stinks to high heaven today. Last night, it smelled like a chemical, a burning rubber kind of smell, not really the smell I associate with skunks. Much more concentrated and acrid. The forecast is not looking good for us, with rain and cooler temps expected from tonight through next Friday.

The dog slept in our room last night, on her foam bed covered double with washable material, but even the foam (three layers down) stinks today, so it's time for a new bed for her. The human furniture is of course off-limits to her for a while.

We humans also stink. I went to the Farmer's Market and grocery store today and heard people wondering if there was a skunk around. There was a fluffy black-and-white long-haired chihuahua running around at the Farmer's Market that caused some double-takes. :-)

My car stinks, though I sat in it only for about 8 minutes total. I'm running the 4th load of laundry now (so far, all dog-related) and have two more, at least, to go.

The dog went to the vet's this morning for a booster rabies shot; she was current on her rabies vaccine but they recommend a booster any time a pet has a run-in with a wild animal. She's now getting her second and third baths, with a mixture of white vinegar, baking soda and a little Dawn liquid detergent -- to neutralise the skunk's potent oil. The vet recommended this, or rather instead of vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, but though I bought some hydrogen peroxide earlier today -- along with white vinegar, gloves, sponges, and more baking soda -- we still don't have enough of it to do the trick, and the vinegar seems to be working well. We're keeping it away from her face. (The vinegar is also working well added to the laundry.)

Our dog is a short-haired shedding variety that doesn't get groomed. Her fur can't be shaved without her looking like a Gloucester Old Spots pig and leaving her prone to sunburn and other skin injury. Judging from other spots she's had shaved for medical procedures, the hair may not grow back, either.

The skunks are around, we think, because our neighbours on both sides have grubs, which skunks love. We have a lot of nightcrawlers in our lawn -- not sure whether that's a skunk food source, too. We don't have any garbage outside and thankfully, the skunks don't seem to be nesting under the deck.

Sunday Update: We gave her another bath yesterday using the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, Dawn recipe linked below. She still stinks. Part of the problem is that most of the spray was on her face -- eyes, nose, mouth -- and that's where we can't wash much using the solution.

A dream I can't remember

I can't remember the dream, but when I wake up I know that it was bad. "holiday song" but the pixies still play in my ears maybe from the dream and maybe I turned on the music before falling a sleep. There is confinement, and the notion of something really horrible happening if I break the rules. I can''t remember what it was, reality mixed up with the past and too much wine that I just had in a party into this nasty feeling that I couldn't really placed because I couldn't remember anything but that panici feeling of confinement, and that bad taste you get in your mouth when you fall asleep in the afternoon without brushing your teeth before and then wake up from a dream at almost midnight.

At the party before, I knew that having that wine was a bad idea, but that girl Candice kept pouring it and I kept drinking it and it was nice and I was feeling too awkward as it was being around people after look weeks of social solitude. We were sitting in the back yard and her dog was barking at the dog in the other back yard and she took out this bark collar and threatened the dog she'll put it on, he took one look at it and hid under the table, he turned and look at me, and his eyes looked so sad. We were joking about it, I really couldn't care less, I don't think it's inhuman, especially living in a big city, to do what you can to teach a dog not to bark all the time, I don't think that a mild electrical shock would be a bad thing, maybe because found it a turn on, or maybe because of the dog's face, I carried that image with me into my dream.

It sucks that I can't remember more, then at least I would know what's bothering me so much now.

On the motorcycle, on the way home, I was thinking about my ex, usually when I get angry thoughts on the motorcycle, I think of my parents.

I don't know why I got so upset, it was all so old, but since I need to take care of the legal documents of the apartment, the only thing that still keep us talking to one another, and I haven't, I guess I'm actually angry with myself. Maybe it's the fact that his wife is supposed to be having a baby this month.

The only thing I remember from that dream is that it happened in Jerusalem and that my friend Karen was there. Waking up I thought I should look her up, then I thought, that I probably would never find her online, last time we talked, 3 and a million years ago, she didn't even have an e-mail and she had no intention of getting into computers, then I wondered whether I wanted her in my life again, 3 thoughts even before I started moving out of this dream state and opening my mouth hard to loosen my jaws and let my ears pop. The noise from outside, a truck on the BQE, air moving, just life, sounded so loud I felt like I was drowning in it, like I would never be able to sleep again in so much noise, then I thought that that last thought was far too close to anxiety and that I shouldn't think about that anymore.

Then I thought about everything I wanted to do that evening, finishing an art submission due tomorrow, finish the painting, cut a stencil, design new business cards, work on the website, answer e-mails, watch a movie, and I felt bad about falling asleep and the way that evening was taken away from me by myself.

I stopped writing my blog because it became too hard, offline flooded the online life and the past flooded the present. I don't like writing about what was, I like writing about what is, now, at this moment, but in that dream I felt so overwhelmed by the echos of the past, as if my existence in the now, is a very thin coating, as if holding os much inside, I would never be able to move out of a very confiding back yard.

Bulldog Saved with CPR

Disabled Air Force war veteran Randy Gurchin saved his 10-month-old English bulldog, Lucy, when she wandered over an icy pond, fell in, and couldn't get herself out:

"'When I went out there, I just laid down on the ice and tried to spread my weight out, and she was dog-paddling.' ... Lucy went under, but the current moved her within Gurchin's reach and he pulled the 50-pound dog from the water. 'As I did … the ice started to crack under me. I just picked her up -- thought she was dead.'"

Emergency Vet

We had a late night visit to the emergency vet last night/this morning. The E-Vet is conveniently located about an hour away from us. It's a very poor and inhumane system, IMO.

The dog showed signs of pain and unhappiness around 9:30 p.m. Sunday night, when she didn't take a bedtime treat, then winced and cried a couple of times while hanging out with us on the bed, as is her custom (the hanging out on our bed before she goes to hers, which is the sofa in the family room -- not the wincing and crying). We thought maybe something was awry with her tummy, as she seemed to gag a couple of times earlier in the day, which is unusual for her. When she went from looking a little hangdog to actually being in pain, over the course of 45 mins or so, we knew we needed to get help for her. We called the e-vet, hurriedly dressed again, and loaded her into the Jeep around 10:30. I sat in the back with her, and we drove as fast as possible, through a few red lights (after stopping first and checking for traffic), on icy, bumpy, dark -- and thankfully, mostly deserted -- streets. I felt like we drove a long, long way, as the dog winced or cried every few minutes.

Once at the vet, she was checked immediately for bloat, or gastric dilatation-volvulus -- a sort of stomach-flipping that can occur in large-chested dogs, especially those who bolt their food and drink a lot of water afterwards. (We had another dog who survived this life-threatening condition thanks to emergency surgery.) Our dog was back with us in the small, overheated waiting room in two minutes when they found no signs of bloat, and we sat, along with three other couples, all dog owners (though no other canines in evidence), and a woman with a cat in a crate, as some hideous TV show blared. Apparently there had been quite a run on the e-vet that evening. One couple had come in at 8:30 and their dog wasn't seen for two hours. They were there until after midnight; their dog, a 9-yr-old female English setter, ended up staying overnight.

We waited almost an hour to be seen, at around 12:20, the last people left in the room. (We had long since turned off the TV.) From what we could gather, there had been two deaths there that night, with a few more very sick dogs sedated in the back room, waiting to be transfered to their regular vet offices at 8 a.m., when the emergency vet closes every non-holiday weekday. This necessity for transfer is another inhumane aspect of this particular system, as we have found when we transported our sick, frail, and recovering-from-surgery dogs from the e-vet to the regular vet over the same roads, roughly the same distance. Animals least capable of enduring being loaded into and out of crates and vehicles, repositioned, and bounced along the road must nonetheless endure it.

The vet who saw us was tired, and very gentle with the dog. While we'd been waiting to see him, we had started to wonder if perhaps something in the dog's neck was hurting her, as her movements and our touching there seemed to elicit the most pain, though not reliably. The vet started with that premise, having found no distention in her belly earlier. He touched her head, face, shoulders, limbs, and neck, and occasionally she would cry or twinge. He put his face into hers, asked her to stay still and not react to his touching by moving another part of her body, so he could isolate the place that hurt. When he did, she screamed, opening her mouth and uttering a guttural cry that seemed to go on for days. Then she did it again, and again, leaning into him, her mouth level with his face, while he wasn't touching her at all. She never tried to bite and in fact wagged her little stump of a tail at him and leaned in close to him immediately after he'd elicited her cries. When the screaming had subsided, he moved her shoulder and limbs and found no problems there.

The two choices for diagnosis seem to be a compacted disc in the neck (C1, C2, C3, or C4, I'm guessing, after studying the canine anatomical model in the exam room) or a very pulled muscle (he didn't say so, but maybe something like a pinched nerve in people?). Based on her lack of neurological symptoms and her ease with his movement of her front limbs, he diagnosed a muscle strain. He weighed her (55 lbs.), then gave her an intramuscular injection of either the NSAID painkiller (Metacam) or the narcotic (Buprenex) and a sub-cutaneous shot of the other. We have some liquid Metacam to give her each night.

We left the e-vet after 1 a.m., but almost turned back when she started panting hard and quick. We called the vet, who told us that he wasn't concerned about it, as the panting could be a result of the Buprenex hitting her system and/or of the pain she felt. The panting was much worse, though, than the panting she had done in the vet office. We stopped for gas not far from the vet to buy us some time to decide what to do, go home or turn back. The panting didn't subside, but I bought some water in case she needed it, and we kept on going towards home, wondering if we were doing the right thing. We were both so tired that it felt difficult to make good decisions. At about 1:45, the panting lessened and she lay down on the seat. We got home a little before 2, carried her in and upstairs, arranged a soft makeshift bed area for her, which we gated in so she wouldn't try to get on our bed or go down stairs, and hoped for the best.

She slept. We slept. From 2 until 7, we all slept.

Now we've been up for almost three hours and she's been softly moaning, groaning, and sort of creaking like a rusty gate for most of it. She has no interest in her food. She's lying on her side on her soft bed in front of the propane stove, which is on and throwing off heat. It's her favourite place on a cold day anyway, and the next couple of days promise to be very cold for March (highs in the teens, lows below 0).

I've got the car ready to take her to our regular vet (only 15 mins away) if she seems to be in distress. She's such a vocal dog -- much more so than our others have been -- that even in the best of times she makes (happy) moaning sounds, a loud noise when she yawns, lots of attention-getting noises. I'm sorry she's feeling so miserable, but glad she is not interested in playing or moving about. Hope she can get some healing sleep today. If she is not markedly better in 40-72 hours (tomorrow evening at the earliest, the wee hours of the morn on Wed. at the latest), we are to bring her into the vet for a re-check, if we don't feel we need to visit them before that.

Update (10:05 a.m.) - She got up on her own and ate her breakfast. Gingerly, as if it might hurt to chew, but she ate it all. Then she went out (I carried her up and down steps) to pee in the snow. Now she's sitting on the bed by the stove, crying and whining.

Update (8:20 p.m.) - She has been laying around all day, pretty listless and sleepy (which is much better than restless and panting in my book), but she eagerly ate dinner, which had the liquid Metacam (painkiller) mixed in it. I noticed that there is blood in and around her right ear canal this evening. When I wiped it with cotton squares, I got a lot of blood out of it. I don't know if her ear is bleeding spontaneously and if that was/is the true cause of her pain, or if she scratched her ear because her ear hurt and that made it bleed, or if she was scratching her ear because her neck muscles/nerves hurt and that was as close as she could get to the source of the pain .... I may take her to the vet tomorrow, or make an appt. for Wednesday. Temps with windchill are predicted to be very cold tomorrow and I hate to subject her to that, plus the transporting, plus the waiting room experience ... Meanwhile, my sister has to have her pacemaker surgery redone tomorrow because of a faulty lead line connection. Grrr.

Update (Thursday, 8 March) - I did take her to the vet, on Tuesday, and she now is on ear medication (Baytril Otic) and antibiotics (Cephalexin) twice a day, plus the Metacam for pain. She has been perky since Tuesday, although there is still quite a bit of blood and gunk coming from her ear. She seems much happier and tolerates the ear drops and our swabbing her ears several times/day, without even whining. We think now that all the pain on Sunday was because of an eardrum about to rupture, and then rupturing, and not due to a neck strain, as she shows no signs of pain in that area at all.

I've been meaning to draw my dogs for some time now, so I started with my older one, the 14yr old who survived a massive cancer tumor two years ago, the vet optimistically gave her one more year to live, and we're coming up on the second anniversary of her surgery! but she's getting old, arthritic, and deaf. so I wonder if she will make it another year. I started sketching her, facing her, and got all but her face and then she decided, "enough of this!, I'm moving" so I moved with her, but the face is wrong. next time!

My Name is Sherry Karve MY NAME IS SHERRY KARVE (Part 2) by VIKRAM KARVE On Christmas Day, and when I fetched the Times of India from the paperboy early in the morning and gave it to my father, he began reading to my mother something about a new pet saloon started in Pune at Salunke Vihar where dogs are pampered, groomed, massaged, styled, pedicured and everything else like the beauty parlours you humans go to. It’s run by a girl called Pooja Karve, and that’s good, because I am a ‘Karve’ too – Sherry Karve – and I’m sure Pooja Karve will give her canine namesake special loving care and chic grooming. I’m going to tell my father and mother that I need some sophisticated exotic pampering and they must take me Pooja Karve’s grooming parlour soon for the complete works and I’m not going to tolerate their rustic style rough and tough bathing and brushing anymore. After all I’m a delicate girl and I want to look and feel good. Now my father is calling me for playing the “bone-game” but before that let me tell you about my home. In front is a huge garden, or rather an orchard, with all types of trees and bushes, and a lush green lawn on which I love to frolic, prance and roll upside down, and lots of flower beds which I love digging up to my mother’s horror. I love digging up the mud – it’s so tasty – and there is plenty of it in the spacious kitchen garden behind the house where I create havoc digging up to my heart’s content, and the only thing I’ve spared are the tomatoes and some horrible tasting leaves called Alu because they itch. I’m lucky – they don’t tie me up but leave me free to roam and play around as I please. And there is so much to explore and investigate, in the nooks and corners of our verdant garden with plenty of trees, bushes and hedges. There is so much to sniff, so much to dig, and so much to chase - squirrels, mongooses and birds to chase. The cats have disappeared though; ever since the day I almost caught one. When I want to go out I tap the front door with my paws and they let me out, and when I want to come in I peep through the windows, and if no one notices I bang the door from the outside or make entreating sounds. My father has warned me not to leave the compound, but sometimes I can’t resist the temptation, and slither under a gap I’ve discovered under the barbed wire and go across to meet my neighbour Sigmund, a five year old pure breed Golden Retriever, in case he is tied outside. He’s an old fogey, quite a boring condescending pompous fellow, and I hate his snooty and snobbish manner, but he’s the only canine company I have so I really don’t have much of a choice. Also, the poor guy is locked inside or tied up most of the time so I have to do my bit to cheer him up. If he’s inside I bark and sometimes he returns my bark, but most of the time he is quite stuck-up and gloomy. The only time he seemed to be all excited and active, and was desperately chasing me all over, was when I had my first chums a few days ago, but he had no chance as my suddenly overprotective father was guarding me like a shadow, never taking me off the leash when I was outdoors. Those were the only few days he totally restricted my freedom, and when I managed to slip away across the fence once, all hell broke loose, and I was located, chased, captured and soundly scolded for the first time. I felt miserable, and sulked, but then my father caressed and baby-talked me and I knew how much he loved and cared for me, and it was all okay. And during those sensitive days he used to specially pamper me and take me for long walks, on a tight leash, keeping an eagle eye and stick ready in his hand for those desperate rowdy rascal mongrels who suddenly appeared from nowhere and used to frantically hang around and follow me, looking at me in a lewd restless manner. Once they even had the gumption to sneak into the compound at night, and growl outside, till my father chased them away. When I was small, and my gums itched, and my milk teeth began to break through, I could not resist chewing up anything I could lay my teeth upon – like shoes, slippers, clothes, toothbrushes, furniture . I especially loved my father’s favourite Kolhapuri kapshi chappals which were so soft and yummy. So my father bought me a chewy bone which, it said on the wrapper, was guaranteed to save everything else. I don’t know why, but I secretly buried the bone in a hole I dug below the Mango tree, and I used to dig it out when I thought no one was looking, chew it a bit, and bury it in some other secret place. One day my inquisitive mother found out, and she dug up the bone when I was sleeping and hid in under the pomegranate tree. When I didn’t find it, at first I was confused, maybe it was my neighbour Sigmund, but then he was too old for chewy toy bones. Then I tracked the bone down with my nose, and when I spied my mother giggling and grinning like a Cheshire cat, I knew who was the culprit. This started the “bone-game”. First they (the humans – my mother and father) would give me the bone, and after I hid it they would rush out into the garden and dig it out – then they would hide the bone (after locking me in the house so I could not see) and make me find it, which I did using my nose. I wondered how they found the bone so fast, and one day I caught them spying crouching behind the hedge when they thought I wasn’t looking and the mystery was solved. So now I first let them see where I’m hiding the bone, and when they complacently and confidently go inside thinking they know everything, I dig out the bone and hide it some other place which they do not know and then watch the fun as they search in vain. Then when they go inside, and my father asks me to get the bone, I run out and get it, for which I earn a tidbit. The way these humans act sometimes, I really wonder who is more intelligent – they or we? Apart from my mother and father, who I’ve told you about, there are some more humans who live in my house – my sister, my brother, grandmothers, and a grandfather – and I’ll tell you all about them next time. And I’ll also tell you about the long exploratory walks I go on with my father in the jungle near Mula River, and more about my childhood pranks. I wake up early in the morning, jump off my sofa, go to my father’s bed, rub my cold wet nose against his hand and give him a lick. He grunts and growls and opens his sleepy eyes, and the moment he sees me his face lights up and he lovingly caresses me and says, “Good Morning, Sherry,” and gets up from bed and opens the main door to let me jump out into the garden, do my ‘little job’ at my favorite place near the mango tree, generally dig in the soft morning mud a bit and sniff around to find out if there are any new morning smells, not forgetting to run and welcome the milkman the moment he comes on his cycle. When I return I find that my father is back in his bed and my mother is up and about. She pats and cuddles me and goes about her business making tea in the kitchen while I loiter around the house. She surreptitiously sneaks to the bedroom and slyly hands over a tidbit to my half sleeping father under the blanket when she thinks I am not looking. I pretend not to notice, as I do not want to spoil their fun. Earlier, when I was small and impatient, I used to snuffle out the tidbit from my father’s hand, but this spoilt his fun and he became grumpy, and now that I am a mature young girl well experienced in the ways of the human world I have realized that it is better to act dumb and let these humans think they are smarter than me. So I go outside, sit down and put on a look of anticipation towards the gate and pretend not to notice my mother hiding and peeping through the corner of the window and giggling to herself. The moment the newspaperman comes on his cycle and shouts ‘paper’, I rush to the gate and fetch the newspaper in my mouth, gripping it just right between my teeth, and hold it up to my horizontal father, who gets up, takes the paper from me and gives me the dog-biscuit he’s been hiding in his hand, as my mother, who has rushed behind me, watches me with loving pride in her eyes. My brother and my sister, who till now were fast asleep in the other room, call out my name, and as I dart between their beds wagging my tail, they both hug and cuddle me all over saying, “Good Morning, Sherry. Sherry is a good girl!” Everyone is cheerful and happy and my day has begun! I love my family, even though they are humans; and I love my house, my surroundings, the place I stay, the life I live – but before I tell you all that, let me tell you where I came from. My ‘ birth-mother’ is a ferocious Doberman who lives in a bungalow in Kothrud and my ‘dog-father’ is unknown, though they suspect it may be the Labrador next door (but the vet wanted proof, so in the column against breed he wrote ‘Doberman X’). I was a sickly weakling, hardly a month old, the only girl, last of the litter of eleven, and the owners were wondering what to do with me. Nine of my handsome brothers had already been selected and taken away, and the owners wanted to keep the tenth, the most beautiful and healthy of them all. They had kept me all alone separated from my ferocious Doberman mother who was growling menacingly in a cage nearby. No one wanted me and I could hear people whispering how ugly and weak I was and I wondered what fate lay in store for me. It hurt to be unwanted and when I heard people wanting to send me away to a farmhouse, or ‘dispose’ me of, I felt frightened when I wondered what was going to be my destiny. One evening a few people came over and a gentle woman with kindness in her eyes looked at me, and on the spur of the moment lovingly picked me up, and the way she tenderly snuggled me I felt true love for the first time. This was my new mother. They got into a car and drove across Pune, past Aundh, across the river, till they reached a bungalow. The kind woman was wondering what her husband’s reaction would be. It was dark. I was scared and cuddled up snugly my mother’s arms to feel safer. Suddenly I found a tough-looking bearded man staring at me. Shivering with fear I looked back at him in terror as he extended his hands towards me. But the moment he held me in his large cozy hands, caressed me lovingly, and put his finger tenderly in my mouth, I felt protected, loved, safe and secure. This was my new father and he had already decided my name – Sherry – the same name of his earlier canine ‘daughter’. [‘Sherry’ means ‘beloved’ – not the wine drink you are thinking about!]. “She was destined to come here,” my mother said. “Yes,” My father said feeding me warm milk. They made a nice warm bed for me in a basket and put it below theirs. And as I drifted into sleep, they both fondled me with their hands. I felt so wonderful and happy for the first time in my life. I had found my true home and my family. I am feeling quite sleepy now and I’ll end here and have a nap. Naughty Dogs

Okay, I admit the weather has been horrible: grey, cold, wet, windy, and -- sometimes -- snowy. Not the best conditions for dog walkies. They don't want to go, I don't want to go. There's the whole ritual of me bundling up, getting the mutts bundled up in their rain coats if necessary, finding a plastic bag for the inevitable ramassage ("I love my quartier, I pick up after my dogs"), the keys, the phone if I'm expecting a call, some change if I want to stop by the bakery...

When it's nice out or I'm feeling particularly energetic, we head up to the Butte-aux-Cailles, around the boules courts of the Boulevard Auguste Blanqui, and maybe even a stroll past our friendly neighborhood police station (it's been a year...I'm still waiting for one of them to say "hi"; they're not very friendly, in fact). Sometimes we stop at the supermarket, where they get tied to the railing by the carts while I'm shopping (sounds cruel, but they get pet by everyone who passes by). I take them into the bakery even though there's a "no dogs" sign (they'd freeze to death or get stolen if I left them outside), and they get to eat up all of the bread crumbs. The boulangère thinks they're cute. She didn't see that one time Lena managed to wiggle into a bottom cabinet, swallowing a few croissants whole before I yanked her out.Lena's the smaller one, but she's a handful. And now that it's crappy outside and the walkies consist of a quick spin around the block, she's definitely showing signs of stir craziness. For the first time since she was a puppy (six years ago), she has been stealing my underwear out of the laundry bag. BAck when she was a pup and we had a garden, I'd find the undies in the grass or under the bushes, covered in dirt and dog saliva, but otherwise unadulterated. But now she brings them into her basket and shreds them to bits. I'm sure Freud would have a field day here, but whatever. I've begun hanging the laundry bag up on the draying rack in the bathroom. So now that her "toys" are gone, she's just sitting here staring at me and giving off a little doggie huff every few minutes. If it was sunny out I could let her lie in the sunbeam on the bed (which usually keeps them quiet for hours), but there's no sun. Not even a little. She's not interesed in her bone. She's not even interested in terrorizing her brother, Pedro (who's doing his own passive-aggressive doggie routine of not eating his kibble for three days in a row). So how to get the dogs out of their winter funk? When I'm in a funk a trip to the pastry shop is always nice, so I think we're going to have to take a trip to the dog bakery this weekend (scroll down to Doggie Services).
