Eventually, we're after getting www.adpdesign.co.uk and www.adpdesign.com to add to our repertoire, but some pesky other companies have got there first! We're keeping our eye on them though, don't worry!

It seems to me that some organizations are trying to boil the ocean when planning - implementing SOA initiatives.

While I agree that challenges (The concepts of a registry, messaging, semantic modeling, orchestration, ESB, EAI products, business process modeling, etc) can be overwhelming, it does not have to be.

SOA Startup Suggestions:

• A phased approach works better.

• Invest in your most valuable assets … Your Staff. Provide them training and mentoring required for success.

• Focus on core competencies (XML, SOAP, XSD’s, WSDL, Message Queuing, Web Services, Security, Code Standards, Etc).

• Insist on Design before code practices. I can argue that cowboy coding has a place and time, but not at the enterprise level.

• Don’t spend time and money training them on high-end vendor products until the above core skill sets are in place.

• Develop a process (Project plan) for the team to follow. Keep it simple (easy to understand and achieve).

• Create a few (example service) projects and assign it to the team (consider bringing in an experienced mentor).

• Expect for the team to struggle with the first couple of services. Encourage them and get them help where necessary.

• Once staff has completed a few exercises, make sure they are comfortable with the mechanics of how a messaging system works.

• Resist throwing vendor products at the staff until they can understand the implications. Vendor products are tools that should serve as workforce multipliers. If you select the wrong product, it can throw your budget and team into a tail spin.

You do not have to have an ESB to get started…..I would submit that introducing the concept of “Contract First” is a great first step. This is a discipline that technical staff can and should implement with minimal overhead. Contracts are true regardless of the existence of an ESB.

While researching dissection for a paper on Early Modern anxieties about not being able to encounter *everything* via sensory functions, I came across an interesting claim: Jonathan Sawday, author of one of the most influential texts on the topic of Early Modern dissection, notes that the idea that the human body is "designed" is very much specific to the late twentieth century. 5. User constructs and configures models to fit current tasks. This is an area where I find many have trouble. This especially true for people who have recently taken a UML course where the focus is on Use Case.

Always start a model with capturing "What is needed".

Ask the following:

Do you know who the stakeholders are (Interested parties)? BTW, these become actors.
Does your project have a sponsor?
Have you interviewed the stakeholder to in order to discover other actors?
Do you know what the goals are of each actor? No, goals are not necessarily requirements...
Have you captured the project vision?
Have you prioritized the goals?
Do you have a project methodology agreement: System will be delivered all at once, or through incremental deliverables with high priority items being first deliverables (Waterfall vs. Iterative strategy).
Has the sponsor agreed to these artifacts and concepts (Document it)?
Do you have these artifacts (Documents) in hand prior to creating an estimate?
Have you provided design and architecture staff these artifacts for feedback prior to developing an estimate?

Note: The project methodology can and does impact the modeling effort.

Note: I recommend that EA Modelers always work with Project Managers and Business Analysts to create the fabric of a model at the onset of a project. It is important that all project team members be able to readily refer to the model during project meetings.

Note: Be sure that a glossary of terms is collected as the above artifacts are produced. Experienced Project Managers and Business Analysts will always collect this information as they know that context is critical.

Note: I am pressing on these issues because without the aforementioned artifacts, your EA modeling effort is likely to be already troubled.

So how do you proceed in EA?

First of all, the Sparx EA tool has the ability to not only create all of these artifacts within the tool, but it also gives us the ability to link external artifacts to the EA project. I find that many Project Managers and Business Analyst prefer other tools they are familiar with instead of using EA. However, remember that you still need to refer to these artifacts within EA. Why?

You should always create a link or trace to these artifacts in order to ensure the ask has been satisfied (Traceability).

So lets take a look at how a default model is constructed.

In the Project Browser, click on the "+" symbol next to each model folder to expand the contents.

Next, lets expand the Business Process Model fully.

Take note that we have some clean-up to do as follows:

1. Actors are located in multiple folders (I can immediately see actors in "Stakeholders" and "Use Case" folders). From a project organization perspective, all actors should only be located in one folder.

So, lets re-name the Use Case Model to Actors (System Users). Two reasons exist for this action:

1. We are not ready for Use Case yet,

2. We need a single model element for all actors.

Note: We can add the Use Case model when we are ready for it.

Right click on the "Use Case Model" and select properties from the menu options. Change the name to "Actors (System Users)". Click "OK".

Your model should look as follows:

Starting out with Sparx EA (Part 1)

It is always interesting when I hear someone talk about using Sparx EA to document a software project.

I have started this blog category in an effort to ease the frustration levels when using this tool.

Regardless of the tool, it is important to remain clear on what UML is and is not. UML is a modeling language, not a methodology.

So, why are we talking about UML when it comes to the Sparx tool?

Easy, without a fundamental knowledge of UML you will find that your effectiveness in using the Sparx EA tool will be very limited. To the credit of the developers of this tool, they have included a great UML tutorial which not only covers most of the fundamentals but gives valuable information regarding usage within the tool (Context).

Note: I will not cover the product setup procedure here as that is a different use case.

I offer the following for creation of your first project:

Pre-Condition: Sparx EA is installed correctly, running with the default configuration settings and no project has been opened.

1. User selects "Create a New Project" from the "Manage Projects" menu items list.

2. User enters an appropriate project name and selects the desired directory for EA project file storage (Assumption: EA has not been installed using a database for project repository).

3. User selects models to add. Recommendation: Limit the models you select to only those that are relevant to your current task. In this example, I have only selected Business Process, Requirements and Use Case.

4. The system (Sparx EA) creates the following project model folders:

Don't write use case as though composing a traditional functional requirement document. Requirements are collected as a sperate artifact.

Do write use case in the form of usage scenario text. Requirements are stated in terms of what the system shall do, while usage scenarios (Use Case) describe actions that the users take and the system responses.

Eventually, our use case text will be used as behavioral specification for the scenario described, and the use case text will sit on the left margin of a sequence diagram. We want to be able to clearly see how the system (shown with objects and messages) implements the desired behavior, as described in the use case text.

Do not avoid the subject of user interface. One of the fundamentals of "use case driven" is that design of the system will conform to the viewpoints of the users. You need to be specific as to what actions the users will perform on your screens. The use of prototype screens, in whatever form, is ok. Remember that transfer of knowledge is the goal. A well formatted Use Case (Following the rules) is great but it is worthless if it does not "Spell Out" the user intent. Yes, I favor substance over form.

Don't write Use Case in a passive voice

A use case is most effectively written from the user's perspective as a set of present-tense verb phrases in active voice. Technical staff have tendency to use passive voice, but use cases should state the actions that the user performs, and the system's responses to those actions. Use Case text is only effective when it is expressed in the active voice.

The tribal tattoos which are considered to be the most popular designs are also known for hundred of years and still up to this time their designs continues to evolve and become even more complex when it comes to designs and styles. Tribal tattoos in fact can be the traditional black style or the colorful ones that can cover every area of the body.

Considering the old school tattoos however are also trendy. These styles are common way back in the 60’s. The anchors and the swallow designs are somehow gaining their popularity back in the art of ink as females and males are getting them to be tattooed on their fleshy.

The lower back tattoos to some extent are commonly be seen on most women. Since the lower back is a painstaking area on women it is also the ideal spot where they used to place their tattoo. Tribal designs, dragons, flowers and other symbols are awesome marks as well. But some women on the other hand include tribal that spreads so that it could cover the base of their hips.

Furthermore, the dragon designs are added on the most popular tats as they are already known in the past. Check out this great CSS advanced menu tutorial by Nick La, showing us how to slice up the menu design step by step and putting them together with CSS.Note: there is an IE6 bug where the hover effect doesn’t display properly. To fix that, you can use Javascript to specify the to display block on mouseover.

A new concept by altering the non navigation items on hover state which will focus the user’s attention on the item they have hovered on, and create a new look and feel for the site overall. Works perfectly in any modern browser, yet still be fully functional in your older version of IE as well.

The Famous Suckerfish Dropdowns is now back and they’re more accessible, even lighter in weight (just 12 lines of JavaScript), have greater compatibility (they now work in Opera and Safari without a hack in sight) and can have multiple-levels.

This menu has a vertical sliding first sub level then two flyout levels and demonstrates how it is possible to change positional styling from ‘absolute’ and off screen to ’static’ and expanding the menu vertically.

Most Artistic Photo Studio Design Ever

I said “Wow!” when saw this flash template. It was recently released by FlashMint. Though I do not really back up tendency to use website templates instead of custom design, but this photo studio flash CMS template pleasantly surprised me. It costs only $109 but looks like $1000s. Why? Bright colors, graphic motion, clean images – all it make the design look trendy and artistic. The navigation is precise and sharp. Have just noticed – you can drag the images up and down with a mouse. Good job, FlashMint team!

Ancient symbolism at the CND

The CND is 50, and the organisation is commemorating its anniversary by encircling AWE at Aldermaston on Easter Monday, just as they did 50 years ago. A new book commemorates a half century of the campaign's enduring symbol, which according to its pacifist designer Gerald Holtom was based on the semaphore signals for N (nuclear) and D (disarmament).

Creativity is a mysterious process, unamenable to logical analysis. Much that appears to be original turns out to be an imaginative fusion of things half-remembered. So it may well have been with the peace symbol, which takes the form of a circle around an inverted version of a Norse symbol - yggdrasil, the 'world tree', or great ash at the centre of the universe.

An Ottawa Citizen review describes how Gerald Holtom asked a shop assistant what she thought of the symbol which was carried by the marchers on what he called 'lollipops'. She liked it, but wondered whether its drooping arms weren't "a bit depressing. Shouldn't peace be something to celebrate?" "He sort of altered his view in that moment," his nephew recalls. "He said, 'Yes, it should be a figure with the hands upwards outstretched'". From then on Holtom always drew the symbol upright.

In his hugely influential 'Book of signs' (first published in German in 1923 as 'Das zeichenbuch' and available on Google Books) Rudolf Koch uses the symbol to stand for a man who undergoes the 'vicissitudes of life'. On his death, the symbol is inverted (and known as the 'todesrune'). With this meaning the symbol was officially specified for the gravestones of SS officers. Gerald Holtom asked to have the symbol - in its upright form - on his gravestone in Kent. That wish was ignored by the letter-cutter.

In the runic alphabet a similar symbol to the yggdrasil is called algiz, (the elk) and is known as the rune of protection.

Opponents of CND referred to the logo as 'the chicken's foot' and Hopi Indians use a similar design, based on the footprint of a crane, as a symbol of tribal unification. It can also be thought of as an inverted or broken cross, like that used to crucify St Peter.

But the roots of the sign may well lie deep within all of us. As a Jungian archetype, it can be read as female genitalia. A sign for the ancient mother goddess, whose message of peace men so often ignore.

Apple's suspiciously tempting ways

An article in Business Week attempts to get at the secret of Apple's design success. They say it boils down to developing ten genuinely different prototypes to a highly finished level, then letting two separate weekly meetings work away at them. One is briefed to only think 'blue sky', the other must address the practicalities. Ten ideas are then refined to three and finally to one.

I've been using a Toshiba laptop instead of my usual Apple one. It's like comparing a Lada with a Porsche. The Toshiba is all tacky, plastic ugliness compared to the Mac's seductive, clean lines, where everything is understated, integrated and in just the right place.

The Apple design process certainly works: Apple's laptop market share is up by 38% on last year, placing them 9th amongst the competition. The iPhone's iconic status as the must-have accessory for elite geeks so worries Google that they've launched a broadside against it. They claim their open source 'Android' programming environment will achieve more sales because it will be on many different manufacturers' phones.

OK, Apple's design process is thorough, and mildly innovative, but that's not it. They succeed because they have an uncompromising design-led vision - and they stick with it because they know the quality of their design has become an overriding factor in their customers' buying decisions.

Windows enthusiasts love to mock Apple and their lead designer Englishman Jonathan Ive CBE, whose early career famously included designing sanitaryware in London. Even in this apparently metrosexual age, there's bizarrely still something suspect about owning a computer that not only looks good but actually works as well. It seems real men not only don't eat quiche, they also don't do foofy computers that might (whisper it) call into question their owners' masculinity.

The power of ornament

Web find of the month is a site devoted to complete reproductions of illuminated books. It includes Owen Jones' astonishing Grammar of Ornament (1856), a tour de force of nineteenth century letterpress and chromolithographic printing which has had an incalculable influence on artists and designers from the Art Nouveau to Gaudi in Barcelona.

Owen Jones' most influential book contains his own re-drawing on 'scientific' principles of over 2,000 decorative designs. The scope is vast: from designs created by 'savage tribes' to ornament from the ancient world, Arabia, China, India and Europe. The motifs presented range from intricate and highly elaborate high Renaissance manuscript illumination to apparently simple geometric tile designs from Moorish Spain and Persia.

A passion for the orient

Jones (1809-74) was an architect who became passionate about the superiority of non-European ornament after touring Turkey, Egypt, Sicily and Spain in 1831. Henry Cole, who founded the Victoria & Albert Museum, was one of his many collaborators.

Jones' passion for the near east found expression in his most significant work as an architect on the interior of Christ Church, Streatham. He was criticised for his 'excessive use' of Islamic motifs there.

Acclaimed for his decorations for the Great Exhibition in 1851, Jones worked for nine years on the publication of a lavish folio work, which exploited the capabilities of the relatively new and demanding process of chromolithography. He sold property to finance its publication, setting up his own press and training his own staff to produce it. He did not live to see it succeed commercially, and many copies were remaindered.

Besides including a historical survey and commentary on the many gorgeous full page colour illustrations, Jones developed a series of 37 'design propositions' which attempted to codify the construction of well-made ornament. For Jones: 'All ornament should be based on geometrical construction' And 'true beauty results from that repose which the mind feels when the eye, the intellect, and the affections, are satisfied from the absence of any want'. In his final chapter he advocated a new kind of architecture based on natural forms.

The rhythm of life

There is an enduring appeal in many of these stunning illustrations. They combine a remarkable and carefully constructed rhythmic intensity with a highly developed colour palette. Since the Modern Movement, architects and designers have associated ornament with the literally superficial, seeing it as a layer of irrelevant decoration that obscures the underlying nature of whatever it is applied to.

For me and I suspect for Jones, the desire to decorate is an integral part of human experience. His use of geometric reconstruction seems to link to metaphysical ideas of the golden section or 'divine proportion' which were taken up by Modern Movement architects such as Le Corbusier.

Good ornament is intrinsic to the very essence of things.

Theres this guy i like.. and i've liked pretty much all my life.. we dated berfore but he broke up with me for someone else.. they just recently broke up and i still have strong feelings for the guy but he only sees me as a friend.. nothing more.. i want to be with him... but i know he wont be with me.. everyone says get over him.. what should i do? try and get him back or just forget? im sooo confused about it.. i mean.. i thought he really liked me and i really liked him.. and then.. bam its over... I love shopping and internet marketing. It's easier said than done, but you will eventually. People told me I would get over him, but I couldn't imagine doing that, I thought I never would. Then after a bit, I found out their's a lot of other better guys, and now he doesn't even cross my mind anymore. Revitalising the image of Scandinavian Design

Internationally, Denmark is respected for streamlined and stylish design of unrivalled quality. And what more could you possibly want, when talking design.

When the associations in people’s minds often relate to timeless designs from the 50’s and 60’s, then some might argue that you could be in need of a face lift.

During 2006, Scandic Interiors will be bringing spotlights of modern day Danish designers, with a view to adding a new string to the bow of Danish Industrial and Residential design.

The language of form, born in Scandinavia in the 50’s and 60’s is still much alive, but there is a new trend simmering in the cold North. They are young up-and-coming designers with something on their minds. People with a need to be noticed and counted; committed professionals with a new take on yesteryears’ classics.

And why, do I hear you ask, have these committed professionals been so long in coming to the front? That is because it takes time to turn the tide, and whilst the World has been busy copying the classic ‘Egg’ and ‘Swan’ chairs, Denmark has been hibernating, only to wake up with a renewed look on the world of timeless design.

So let go of Georg Jensen, Hans Wegner and Arne Jacobsen for a while and embrace Louise Campbell, John Sebastian, DNMARK – names few have heard of, but many will become acquainted with over the next many years. To learn more, and to open your eyes to Danish design 2006, take a look at these:
